OVERALL SUMMARY
This position supports staff veterinarians to ensure the heath and well being of dogs and puppies under our care. RVT/CVT participates in preventive care duties, triage, basic and advanced/complex procedures which may include: anesthesia, radiology, dermatology, oncology, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, emergency and critical care, and rehabilitation. Educates and communicates relevant information to GDB staff and constituents.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
As directed by veterinarian, administer treatments, vaccinations, or medications (topical, oral, hypodermic or IV). Establish IV catheters, administer fluid therapy.
As directed by veterinarian, administer and monitor anesthesia.
Obtain, process and submit samples for diagnostic testing, including feces, urine, blood and cytology specimens.
Position, expose and process radiographic images (standard and dental).
Undertake dental procedures (e.g. prophylactic cleaning and polishing, chart dentition, dental extractions as permitted by applicable Practice Act, radiography).
Prepare patients for surgery and endoscopy. Assist with surgery or endoscopy as needed.
Understand pharmacology/pharmacokinetics in order to understand medications and calculate medication/fluid doses properly.
Maintain surgical, dental, endoscopic, and other technical equipment.
Perform patient examinations including pain assessments; document observations and communicate findings to veterinarian.
Perform routine laboratory procedures, including but not limited to CBC, blood chemistry, serology, cytology, urinalysis and fecal exams.
Maintain specialized medical records both in GDB database and for outside veterinarians.
Answer and screen calls, route as needed, and respond to callers’ needs. Provide advice as appropriate. Facilitate VCP/VFA authorization process as needed.
Admit and discharge patients. Communicate with staff and constituents regarding veterinary care and document details.
Provide education on canine health care topics for constituents, including graduates, puppy raisers, volunteers or employees as needed.
Train and supervise volunteers.
Provide on-call service during off hours, approximately 7.24 hours per month.
Adhere to our organization's safety policies and procedures and encourage others to do the same. Promptly report incidents and accidents according to campus procedures.
Undertake other duties assigned.
POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Licensed to work as a Registered Veterinary Technician (SR) or Certified Veterinary Technician (SR); at least 3 years experience desirable. AS in Veterinary Technology or equivalent.
Ability to safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90 pounds, with varying strength and manageability. Ability to safely lift up to 40 pounds. Employees are required to seek assistance when lifting dogs or objects weighing more than 40 pounds.
Able to communicate via voice mail and e-mail, able to perform basic word processing and database tasks within three months of employment.
Good interpersonal skills and a pleasant manner dealing with the public.
Provide on-call service during off hours if needed.
Able to work weekends, occasional nights and holidays.
Able to work on-call during off hours, approximately 7-24 hours per month.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Full-time, exempt, executive position.
