Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is excited to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 20-26, a time to recognize and appreciate the contributions of our 3,000+ extraordinary volunteers. These dedicated individuals support our mission in countless ways: as campus volunteers, breeder custodians, puppy raisers, foster care providers, office helpers, docents, and much more. Simply put, we couldn’t do what we do without them.

“We’re constantly in awe of the passion, energy, and heart that our volunteers bring to GDB,” says Jen Bernstein, GDB’s volunteer engagement manager. “They truly make everything we do possible, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them during National Volunteer Week."

The week will kick off on Monday, April 21, with a special recognition email sent to all volunteers, followed by the distribution of goodie bags at our Oregon and California campuses—a small token of our immense appreciation.

One of the week’s highlights is a live webinar on Tuesday, April 22. All GDB volunteers are invited to join this special event, where we’ll dive into the core of GDB’s impactful programs: Guide Dog Mobility, K9 Buddy, and Orientation & Mobility Immersion. During the webinar, GDB staff will be joined by clients who are actively benefiting from each program. This unique conversation will provide volunteers with deeper insights into the vital roles these programs play in changing lives and how they can continue to make a difference.

The celebrations don’t stop there! Throughout the week, volunteers will be treated to a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at our Oregon campus, where we’ll toast their hard work and dedication. On our California campus, we’ll feature a Popcorn and Apple Nacho Snack Station to bring everyone together for a fun and tasty celebration. In addition, personal messages from GDB’s Executive Team and Volunteer Engagement Team will be shared to express gratitude and highlight the immense value our volunteers bring to GDB.

GDB’s participation in National Volunteer Week is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the rich history of volunteerism and the incredible impact of volunteers nationwide. As Jen Bernstein says, “This is not just a week for our volunteers, but a week with deep historical roots, emphasizing the power of giving back and the importance of community involvement.”

So, as we celebrate National Volunteer Week, let’s take a moment to honor all those who dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to helping others—volunteers everywhere, including those here at GDB, who make our work possible.
