Vickie Kennedy has always lived a life full of curiosity and connection, but when she traveled with a white cane, she felt disconnected from others. That all changed when she was paired with her first guide dog, Frieda, 25 years ago.

Since that first bond, Vickie has been a dedicated guide dog user with Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), receiving three incredible canine companions over the years: Freida, Angela, and now, Buddy. Each dog has played a pivotal role in shaping Vickie's independence and confidence, but it’s not just the dogs that have made a difference in her life. It’s the unwavering support from GDB that has been with her every step of the way.

“GDB has been there for me from the very start,” Vickie says, recalling the first year with Freida. “When I was a new guide handler, I would call the Client Support Center at least once or twice a week for reassurance, and they never got tired of me. No matter how many questions or concerns I had, they were always there to help.”

Living in Hawaii now, Vickie and her husband, Jim, are retired and on a fixed income, so the financial support they’ve received through GDB’s Veterinary Financial Assistance (VFA) program has been invaluable. “We are deeply grateful for the help we’ve received for surgeries, medications, and the little things that make life easier,” says Jim. “It’s a Godsend for us.”

But for Vickie, GDB’s help goes beyond the financial assistance they’ve received for vet care. “I’m so thankful they take the time to listen to us, to help us work through any issues with the dogs, to troubleshoot. It’s more than just service—it’s a community of caring people.”

Having Buddy by her side has changed everything. When Vickie goes for her morning walks, she says it’s easy to forget she’s blind. With Buddy leading the way, the world feels accessible, even graceful. “With a guide dog, you glide past obstacles,” Vickie says with a smile. “There’s a peace of mind that comes with it. And when Buddy weaves me around a hurdle, I know I’m safe.”

For Jim, the presence of Buddy means more than just physical safety. He feels an overwhelming sense of relief every time Vickie and Buddy step out the door. “I cannot express enough gratitude to GDB for the gift of Vickie’s three beautifully trained dogs,” he says. “When Vickie takes off with Buddy, I feel confident she’s safe, no matter where she’s going.”

Vickie’ dogs are more than just guides. They’re companions who open doors to the world. “Before, no one ever came up to me when I was using my cane,” Vickie reflects. “I felt isolated. But now, with my dog by my side, it’s like I have a constant icebreaker. People approach me, they talk to me—it’s like I’ve gained a whole new social life.”

Through GDB, Vickie and Jim have found more than just practical support—they’ve found a team that cares and a community that listens. For Vickie, Buddy isn’t just a guide dog; he’s a symbol of the incredible journey she’s been on, one that’s been full of connection, independence, and, most of all, love.
