FUNdamentals: Pups 11+ Months of Age

A grown Golden Retriever guide dog puppy.

Next Stop, College!

A puppy’s first year goes by in the blink of an eye! Before you know it, they’re getting ready for the next phase of their journey – whether that’s being selected as a breeder to share their wonderful qualities with future generations of guide dogs, being trained and matched with a client as a guide dog or K9 Buddy, or finding their purpose in another working or companion role.

During the puppy’s final months as a guide dog puppy we are focused on:

  • The individual puppy’s areas for improvement!
  • Building fitness in preparation for recall

At this age, we are no longer teaching new skills, but honing ones we’ve been building along the way and continuing to explore the world with our puppies. Puppies will have different things to focus on in preparation for being recalled to a GDB campus.
