Meet Meagan Foertsch, one of Guide Dogs for the Blind's newest qualified guide dog mobility instructors, an accomplishment reached after completing a three-year, in-house apprenticeship. GDB's apprenticeship requires academic study of subjects ranging from causes of blindness to canine behavior, as well as hands-on experience in dog training and client instruction.
Meagan is originally from Southern California, and now lives in Sandy, Ore., and is based at GDB's Oregon campus. She attended Moorpark College where she completed the school's exotic animal training and management program and earned a Psychology degree. Before coming to GDB in 2019, Meagan applied her education to jobs at both Seaworld Discovery Cove and Universal Studios Hollywood Animal Actors show, where she worked with a wide variety of animals ranging from dolphins to pigeons.
"I have always had a love for animals and wanted to help make a difference in this world," Meagan said regarding her career choice. As a bonus, she loves getting to start each morning being greeted by happy wagging tails. "The best part of my job is watching guide dog teams graduate - that has been the most rewarding aspect of this job by far!"
In her free time, Meagan loves visiting the coast, camping, and snowboarding. She and her boyfriend Keenan have two dogs: Harley (a brindled boxer mix) and Nala (small black Shepherd mix). "My passion and love for this job has inspired Keenan to also get involved," Meagan said. "He is now a GDB volunteer foster care provider!"
